These four causes account for most calls like this we run across the Las Vegas Valley – Summerlin, Henderson, Spring Valley, and everywhere in between.
Our water carries mineral levels several times what most of the country sees. Inside a tank heater, those minerals fall out as scale the moment the water is heated, building a layer of sediment on the bottom of the tank. That layer insulates the water from the burner — so the heater runs longer, overheats the tank bottom, and fatigues the steel. The rumbling and popping you hear from an older Vegas water heater is water boiling through that sediment layer. It’s the sound of the tank dying.
The tank gets the blame, but the connections are frequently the real problem — corroded fittings, failing flex lines, and the accelerated corrosion that happens where mismatched metals meet hard water. These failures start as a slow weep you never see, and end as the flood you find at 6 a.m. When we inspect a “failing” water heater, the fittings get looked at as hard as the tank.
A water heater in Vegas needs its tank flushed and its anode rod checked — the sacrificial rod inside the tank that corrodes so the tank doesn’t. In this water, an anode rod can be consumed years earlier than in soft-water cities, and once it’s gone the tank itself starts dissolving. Almost nobody flushes their tank, and almost nobody has ever heard of the anode rod. Those two facts are why “it just suddenly failed” almost never describes what actually happened.
No expansion tank on a closed system, wrong venting, missing drain pan, undersized or overtightened connections — install-day shortcuts on a water heater behave exactly like install-day shortcuts on an AC: invisible at first, decisive later. A properly installed heater in this valley outlives a carelessly installed one by years.
