This homeowner in Las Vegas contacted Bob’s Repair for cooling issues on an older R-22 air conditioning system. After a full system inspection, our technician diagnosed low refrigerant levels, a faulty capacitor, and signs of refrigerant leakage. We addressed the immediate concerns and provided repairs to restore cooling performance while offering guidance on longer-term system planning.
During the inspection, we discovered that the system was significantly low on refrigerant—over 3 pounds undercharged—indicating a leak somewhere in the sealed system. Using a Fieldpiece diagnostic, we confirmed suction pressure at 68.2 psig and liquid pressure at 249.5 psig, with a nearly zero superheat reading, suggesting the system was flooding.
The condenser capacitor was also found to be weak and out of range. Thermographic readings showed excellent air output at 43.4°F once recharged, confirming system responsiveness after refrigerant was added.
We replaced the faulty 440/30 dual-run capacitor to stabilize fan and compressor operation. To address the refrigerant loss, we injected Easy Seal leak sealant into the system, which helps seal minor leaks from the inside. We then recharged the unit with 4 pounds of R-22 refrigerant. After charging, we verified subcooling at 29.2°F and superheat at 0.2°F, ensuring optimal refrigerant flow.
The system was then fully tested for cooling output and safety, with the thermostat restored to original settings.
After repairs and refrigerant recharge, the AC system is once again cooling the home effectively. While we were able to restore operation with a sealant and recharge, we advised the homeowner that R-22 systems are becoming increasingly expensive and difficult to maintain.
Although this repair offers temporary relief, the best long-term solution remains system replacement with modern, R-410A or R-454 B-compatible equipment.
