Blower Motor Replacement Cost: Slow AC Fan on a Summerlin Rooftop Unit

In Bob’s recent Las Vegas jobs, blower motor replacement has run about $1,000 to $1,650. Prices vary with the equipment and what testing finds. Most of the spread comes from the motor type: a variable-speed ECM motor costs more than an older single-speed motor. An ECM motor is what we tested on September 30, 2026, at a Summerlin home in the 89135 ZIP, where one of two AC systems was moving air more slowly than the other. The homeowner approved a new ECM blower motor, and we ordered it.

What We Found

The home has two AC systems, and only one was having trouble. For about three weeks, its fan had run noticeably slower than the other system’s in fan-only mode. The homeowner also noticed a new filter no longer pulled tight against the return grille the way it used to, the unit had gotten noisier, and that part of the house smelled musty. Another company had already given a different explanation, so they wanted an independent diagnosis.

The system is a rooftop package unit, 8 to 9 years old according to the booking note. We opened the blower compartment, inspected the ECM blower motor, and checked the contactor and capacitor. A thermal camera read 64 degrees at a supply vent inside. While we were there, both systems’ fans ran at the same speed, so the tech explained up front that a new motor was the most likely fix but could not be promised to change the fan speed.

How We Fixed It

  • Recommended replacing the ECM blower motor on the affected rooftop unit.
  • Ordered the motor after the homeowner approved it. When a motor isn’t stocked locally, it can take 3 to 7 days to arrive.
  • Set up a call for the next morning with an arrival date and the written estimate.

How it turned out

The homeowner approved the new blower motor, and it was ordered for a return visit. This job’s record ends at the order.

What are the signs of a failing blower motor?

Weak airflow at the vents is the big one. Others include a fan that runs slower than it used to, a new hum or rattle from the air handler, a motor that runs hot or trips a breaker, and a house that won’t cool even though the outdoor unit runs. Our weak AC airflow guide covers the other causes.

Could a slow fan be something other than the motor?

Yes. A clogged filter, a dirty blower wheel, a dirty indoor coil, or a crushed duct all cut airflow. On an ECM motor, the motor’s control module or its speed settings can also be the problem. That’s why we test before ordering a part.

What happens if I keep running it?

A weak or failing blower lets the indoor coil get too cold, which can freeze it and stop cooling altogether. A motor that finally seizes can also take out other parts, like the seized blower we replaced in North Las Vegas.

Safety note: HVAC repairs involve high voltage, refrigerant and, on gas furnaces, combustion gases. Leave them to a licensed technician.
