This Las Vegas home was experiencing a complete AC failure during rising temperatures. The system, a 1994 3-ton straight cool condenser paired with a hydronic air handler, had stopped cooling altogether. Bob’s Repair was called in to perform a full diagnostic and provide honest advice on possible repairs and long-term solutions.
Our technician discovered several critical issues during the inspection. The condenser fan motor was spinning in reverse due to a failed capacitor, and when tested further, the fan side of the motor showed no functionality at all. The compressor capacitor was also operating outside its normal range.
The refrigerant levels were completely flat, and because the unit uses R-22—banned since 2019—recharging or replacing parts was not a viable long-term option. Inside, the blower motor showed signs of oil loss, and the evaporator coil was severely rusted and caked with dirt. A heavily clogged return filter added to the airflow restriction issues.
To temporarily restore limited operation, we replaced both the failed run capacitors and attempted to power the fan motor back on. We also advised the homeowner to replace the return filter immediately to prevent further airflow and system strain. While this offered a short-term solution, we emphasized the need for immediate monitoring due to the fan motor’s questionable status and the complete loss of refrigerant.
Although we were able to make minor repairs to get the unit running briefly, the system is nearing the end of its life. Between the obsolete R-22 refrigerant, extensive rust, and worn-out electrical components, continued investment in repairs would likely result in diminishing returns. We provided clear guidance on replacement options, recommending a new Trane or RunTru straight cool condenser paired with a compatible First Co air handler for long-term reliability.
