Water Leaking From AC Into the Ceiling: Rusted Pan and Coil in Las Vegas

When water from your AC shows up in the ceiling, the drain side of the indoor unit has failed somewhere: a clogged drain line, a rusted or cracked drain pan, or a coil that’s dripping outside the pan. The first sign is often a bubbled or stained patch of drywall. On September 19, 2026, in a Las Vegas home in the 89183 ZIP, a bubbled ceiling led us to a 16-year-old air handler with a rusted drain pan and a corroded indoor coil. The homeowner chose to replace the full system.

Water Leaking From AC Into the Ceiling: Rusted Pan and Coil in Las Vegas

What We Found

The homeowner called about a bubbled ceiling and possible water above it. The indoor unit, in a hall closet, is a hydronic air handler: one cabinet holds a hot water coil fed by the home’s water heater, plus the AC’s indoor coil and drain pan.

Inside the cabinet, we found:

  • A drain pan rusted along its edges, with standing water and rust under the coil.
  • Green corrosion on the copper coil fittings and heavy dust and debris packed around the coil.
  • At the outdoor unit, rust on the fan guard and the top of the fan motor.

A rusted pan can’t hold condensate reliably, and water that escapes the cabinet can soak into the drywall nearby.

How We Fixed It

  • Inspected the air handler, coil, drain pan, and outdoor unit, and photographed each problem for the homeowner.
  • Gave the homeowner two paths: an immediate repair to address the leak, or a full system replacement.
  • The homeowner chose the full system upgrade: a new RunTru by Trane system paired with a new hydronic air handler.

How it turned out

The homeowner approved a full replacement, which swaps out the rusted pan and corroded coil along with the rest of the 16-year-old system.

Why is water leaking from my AC into the ceiling?

An AC pulls water out of the air as it cools. That water drips into a pan under the indoor coil and runs out a drain line. A clogged drain line is the most common cause of leaks, followed by a rusted or cracked pan, a disconnected drain, and a frozen coil that melts faster than the pan can drain. In attic installs, a secondary pan with a float switch should catch overflow before it reaches the ceiling. A yearly AC tune-up includes checking the drain.

What is a hydronic air handler?

It’s an indoor unit that uses hot water from your water heater for heat, with a small pump moving the water through a coil. For cooling, it works like any split AC, with an indoor coil, a drain pan, and an outdoor condenser.

Should I repair or replace a leaking 16-year-old system?

If the leak is a clogged drain, a repair makes sense. When the pan is rusted through and the coil is corroded, the coil is often the next failure. Our coil corrosion write-up and full system replacement page explain how to weigh it.

Safety note: HVAC repairs involve high voltage, refrigerant and, on gas furnaces, combustion gases. Leave them to a licensed technician.
