Before anyone unbolts anything, the refrigerant in your old system has to be pulled out with a recovery machine — it’s federal law, and it’s also the first honesty test of the day. Venting refrigerant to the sky is faster and free, which is exactly why corner-cutting crews do it. If you don’t see a recovery machine running before the old unit comes down, ask why.
Getting a full system out of a Vegas attic — and the new one in through the same small access hole — is careful, physical work. Done sloppily, it damages ductwork, platform framing, and drywall before the new system is even unboxed. Done right, the old equipment leaves as a neat pile of scrap and your attic is cleaner than the crew found it.
Copper refrigerant lines have to be cut clean, flushed of old oil and debris, and brazed while nitrogen flows through them. Brazing without nitrogen cooks black oxide scale onto the inside of the pipe — and that scale migrates straight into your brand-new compressor. It’s invisible the day of the install and fatal five to ten years later. This is the single most-skipped step in the Valley, because no homeowner ever thinks to ask about it.
“It blows cold” is not a test. A real commissioning includes weighing in the exact refrigerant charge, measuring static pressure and airflow, checking temperature split, and verifying the electrical draw against the manufacturer’s specs. You should get those numbers, in writing. A system that’s merely “running” on day one can be quietly overworking itself every day after.
