One Room Not Heating on a Zoned System: Failed Damper Motor in Las Vegas

When one room won’t heat on a zoned system, the damper for that zone is the first thing to check. Its motor may have failed, the damper may be stuck shut, or the zone board may not be sending it a signal, so the furnace runs and that room gets nothing. That’s what we found on February 20, 2026, in a Las Vegas home in the 89141 ZIP. The master bedroom got no heat even though the system turned on, and the damper motor for that zone had stopped responding to the zone board. The homeowner chose to replace all of the zoning equipment.

One Room Not Heating on a Zoned System: Failed Damper Motor in Las Vegas

What We Found

The homeowner called because the heat in the master bedroom wasn’t working. The system turned on, but no warm air came out in that room, even with the Nest thermostat set to heat at 80 degrees. The system is about 3 years old, with the equipment and duct runs in the attic and a zone board that tells each zone’s damper when to open. The damper motor for the master bedroom zone had failed and wasn’t responding to the board. We photographed the zone board wiring, the round dampers inside the ducts, and the attic runs, and checked air temperatures at the registers with an infrared thermometer.

How We Fixed It

  • Showed the homeowner the repair options for the zoning system.
  • The homeowner chose to replace all of the zoning equipment, which comes with a 1-year warranty.
  • Scheduled the replacement for a return visit on Monday, February 23.

How it turned out

The cause of the cold bedroom was confirmed on the first visit, and the full zoning replacement was booked for three days later.

How can I tell if a zone damper motor has failed?

The clearest sign is one zone that never gets air while the other zones heat and cool normally. A technician checks whether the zone board is sending power to that damper motor, then whether the damper actually moves. If the board sends the signal and the damper stays put, the motor is the problem. If no signal reaches the motor, the board or the wiring is next.

Should I replace one damper motor or the whole zoning system?

It depends on the age and condition of the other parts. Replacing one motor fixes that zone. Replacing the board and dampers together puts every zone on new parts under one warranty. We show both options after testing so you can pick.

What if my home isn’t zoned and one room is still cold?

Then the cause is usually in the ductwork: a crushed or disconnected run in the attic, a long duct to a far room, or a closed register. Our rooms at different temperatures page covers those, and our heat not reaching all rooms diagnostic shows how we trace it.

Safety note: HVAC repairs involve high voltage, refrigerant and, on gas furnaces, combustion gases. Leave them to a licensed technician.
